The Iskong Bantay Watchtower was built in 1752 as an observation and defense tower to determine weather condition and to warn the town folks of impending moro pirate attacks. Named in memory of Francisco Tandas, popularly known as Iskong Bantay, chief defender of the town in the raid of 1872. Atimonan is located 175 kilometers southeast of Manila. It is traversed by the Maharlika Highway, which extends up to Bicol Region that links the regional and provincial movements to Manila. Continue reading

Moro Watchtowers in Guimbal, Iloilo

Moro Watchtowers Guimbal Iloilo Pescador Generosa Cristobal Colon Rizal Tagguisan Defense Tower History Construction Century Pirates The Moro Watchtowers are located in the coastal municipalitiy of Guimbal in Iloilo. During the 17th century, constant attacks from Moro pirates made these watchtowers as a defense mechanism necessity during the pre-hispanic era. During that time, the Moro pirates captures natives of Guimbal and sold them as slaves in Mindanao. These structures have been spruced up and beautified by the Department of Tourism in 1984. Although now in presentable condition, the upper levels have been coated with cement and has faux rock outlines while the cavity was filled up and cemented. A streetlight has been mounted at the centers. There are five watchtowers, each in Pescador, Generosa-Cristobal Colon, Rizal-Tugguisan. Continue reading
