The Kiniray-a Culture

Antique ProvinceThe Kiniray-a, also known also as Antiqueño, Hantik, and Hantikanon, they are concentrated in the municipalities of San Jose (36,902), T. Fornier (24,254), Culasi (27,915), and Bugasong (23,767). In the province of Antique, they number some 369,872. The total national population is about 529,285 (NSO 1990). Kinaray-a is an Austronesian language spoken mainly in Antique Province in the Philippines. It is also spoken in Iloilo province and certain villages in Mindanao that trace their roots to Antique Province or Kinaray-a speaking areas of Iloilo Province. Kinaray-a came from the word “iraya” equivalent to “ilaya” in Tagalog, which refers to a group of people residing in the mountain areas of the province. Continue reading
